BKW simplifies payment at EV charging stations with TWINT
12 June 2025
Together with TWINT and payment system expert Hectronic, BKW has developed a solution that simplifies payment at public EV charging stations. The aim of the collaboration is to make the payment process more user-friendly, eliminate roaming fees and ensure a transparent pricing structure.
Electric car drivers often find themselves confronted with different apps, charging cards and, in some cases, opaque fee models when charging their vehicles. The new solution enables simple payment directly at the charging station via TWINT – without any additional registration or credit card entry. Users simply scan the TWINT QR code at the charging station. The app clearly displays the price per kilowatt hour, charging process and duration. The charging process can be ended at any time and there are no roaming fees.
Maximum security: protection against QR code phishing
Another advantage of the new system lies in its security: the TWINT QR codes are tamper-proof and provide reliable protection against so-called quishing (QR code phishing), i.e. covering legitimate QR codes with fake phishing QRs. The TWINT app automatically recognises whether the code is authentic.
Already in use at 300 charging points – expansion planned
The system is already in use at around 300 charging points in the BKW network, including at all publicly accessible IKEA locations in Switzerland. Pilot operation at the Grauholz service area near Bern showed a high level of acceptance: already one third of the charging processes there were paid for with TWINT. BKW is pursuing an open approach: the system is available to all operators of public charging stations in Switzerland. The integration of additional partners is intended to further facilitate access to electric mobility and promote its uptake.
More information and an overview list of all BKW charging stations with TWINT payment options can be found on the Energy website.
