By 2028, BKW Power Grid will install over 400,000 smart meters in the BKW supply area. More than 500 devices are being installed each day. This will create a comprehensive intelligent metering system – as the basis for greater transparency in electricity consumption and more targeted planning of the power grid.

Service provider
BKW Power Grid
As the operator of Switzerland’s largest distribution grid, BKW Power Grid ensures that electricity flows reliably from production facilities to our customers.
BKW Power Grid manages the nationwide smart meter rollout in its own supply area. Specialists from project management, logistics, device management, scheduling, customer service and metering data management work together to achieve this. BKW Power Grid is supported in particular by cablex during the installations. The smart meters come from Kamstrup and Ensor/Semax.

An intelligent metering system for the energy transition
Smart meters measure electricity consumption digitally and transmit the data for further processing. For customers, this creates the basis for new services such as energy monitoring: they can track their electricity consumption more easily and identify potential for optimisation.
The data also provides added value for grid operation. It helps BKW Power Grid to better understand the current grid load, optimise planning and advance the expansion of the electricity grid in a more targeted way. By 2028, all customers in the BKW supply area are expected to have a Smart Meter.
Many specialist areas, one common rhythm
The rollout involves far more than replacing the meter on site. Project management, logistics, device management, scheduling, customer service, metering data management and IT work together to ensure that devices are available in the right place at the right time and that the metering data is transmitted and processed correctly. New deliveries are also checked with random samples as well as connection and data processing tests before they are approved for installation.
