BKW began construction work to renew and reinforce the substation in Niederbipp in May 2025. This project is a central component of a comprehensive strategy to adapt the electricity grid in the Oensingen/Niederbipp region to the growing demands of the energy transition. Completion is scheduled for July 2027.
The Niederbipp substation, originally built in 1982, plays a crucial role in regional electricity distribution. The expansion of the substation is essential due to the sharp increase in load. This is being triggered, among other things, by major industrial projects in the Oensingen/Niederbipp region on the cantonal border between Solothurn and Bern.
The project involves the procurement of an additional 50/16 kV transformer with a capacity of 40 megavolt-amperes, the construction of a new transformer location and a new trough for rainwater infiltration. In addition, the existing 50 kV switchgear will be replaced by modern air-insulated switchgear in order to increase the efficiency and reliability of the electricity supply.
With the investment of 6.87 million Swiss francs, BKW is focusing on forward-looking technologies to ensure a reliable and sustainable energy supply. The project helps to master the challenges of a high-growth region and strengthen the infrastructure for the coming decades.
