enmacc is a major online platform on which energy is traded. The partnership between BKW and enmacc will make it possible from February to buy and sell guarantees of origin (GOs) directly via the BKW portal and the enmacc platform.
Since 2019, BKW partners, such as local energy suppliers, have been able to trade electricity with over 560 companies on enmacc’s platform.
From February, it will be possible to trade not only electricity but also guarantees of origin via the portal. This integration, made possible by an interface between the platforms, ensures fast, efficient and secure electricity trading. As a result, the parties involved benefit from high liquidity, a broad network of trading partners and competitive prices.
Preparing for future challenges
“From 2027, guarantees of origin will no longer be issued annually, but on a quarterly basis, which could lead to shortages in winter and drive prices up significantly,” explains Chris Cotting, Head of Energy Sales CH at BKW. “Direct access to a liquid GO market is essential to ensure stability and competitiveness. By providing direct access to the GO market via the enmacc platform, we are giving our customers the tools they need to effectively hedge their energy origins.”
What does the collaboration bring?
Jens Hartmann, CEO of enmacc, adds: “We are delighted to expand our partnership with BKW and to offer their cooperation partners the same seamless trading experience and excellent liquidity for HKNs that they already enjoy in electricity trading. With over 50 TWh of HKNs initiated by more than 150 companies this year, enmacc offers unparalleled access to a large network of HKN traders. This enables trading in technologies such as hydropower, wind, solar, nuclear energy and biomass, as well as in monthly profiles and country-specific procurement in Europe.”
What are guarantees of origin?
A guarantee of origin is an official, digital certificate that proves which energy source the electricity generated comes from.
For example, a GO shows whether the electricity was produced from wind, solar, hydropower, biomass or other sources. It helps to distinguish electricity from renewable energy sources from electricity from fossil or nuclear sources.
Guarantees of origin are important to ensure that green electricity really comes from renewable sources, and they support the transition to sustainable energy.
