Market and competition
We compete in the market
As a listed company under private law, we do not primarily perform public duties – we operate under the same conditions as private providers.
Corporate responsibility
How we act in the market
We are accountable to our shareholders for our actions and do not derive any advantage from the participation of the Canton of Bern or from the regulated grid.
Grid operation is a natural monopoly; the tariffs are regulated on a cost basis. The law requires us to unbundle the grid and competitive business in terms of accounting and information. Cross-subsidies are prohibited.
Customer focus at the forefrontSince the partial opening of the electricity market, we have been operating in free competition. Of our three business areas – Energy Solutions, Power Grid and Infrastructure & Buildings – only Power Grid is regulated; the grid infrastructure is a natural monopoly.
Ownership structure
This is how our shareholder base is distributed
The Canton of Bern holds the majority, while the remaining shares are held by Groupe E and in free float.

Greater Bern economic region
We make an impact in the region
Stock market listing and broad-based strategy strengthen the Swiss economy and especially the Canton of Bern.
We make contributions through taxes, water fees and dividends. As a distribution grid operator, we are also active in Jura, Solothurn and Basel-Landschaft.
Employer and training providerIn the regions in which we work, we employ people and train skilled professionals. This keeps knowledge and value creation in the region.
