BKW has acquired the Öhringen-Karlsfurt wind farm in Baden-Württemberg. The wind farm is set to go into operation in the first quarter of 2027 and produce more than 80 GWh of renewable electricity annually. This acquisition adds 33.6 MW to BKW’s wind portfolio in Germany and further expands renewable energy production in one of the company’s core European markets.
BKW signed the contract with project developer ABO Energy for the purchase of the Öhringen-Karlsfurt wind farm in early October 2026. ABO Energy developed the wind farm and is implementing it on a turnkey basis. Construction work has been under way since the second quarter of 2025 and will be completed in the first quarter of 2027.The Öhringen-Karlsfurt wind farm comprises seven wind turbines with a capacity of 4.8 MW each. Together they will have an installed capacity of 33.6 MW and are expected to produce more than 80 GWh of renewable electricity per year. Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) secures the sale of the produced electricity in the long term.Targeted expansion in the German wind marketThe purchase of the Öhringen-Karlsfurt wind farm increases BKW’s installed onshore wind capacity in Germany from 183 MW to around 217 MW. The location in the southern state of Baden-Württemberg makes a sound addition to the wind portfolio, expanding its geographical focus beyond northern Germany. «The acquisition of Öhringen-Karlsfurt sends a clear signal for further growth. For the first time in more than 10 years, we are investing in an onshore wind farm in Germany once again and we are systematically expanding our position in one of our core European markets. This reflects our dual focus on renewable power generation and flexibility – because it’s only the interaction of the two that enables a powerful, resilient and future-proof energy system,» says Margarita Aleksieva, Executive Vice President Energy Production.Following the early 2026 commissioning of the Cerignola wind farm in Italy (125 MW), Öhringen-Karlsfurt represents a further step in the growth of the European wind portfolio. The expansion of renewable electricity production is a key component of the «BKW Solutions 2030» strategy. Here BKW is consistently pursuing a disciplined investment approach: each project must make a clear strategic contribution while also meeting defined return requirements. It is an approach that combines the targeted expansion of BKW’s renewables portfolio with value-creating growth.
