Cerignola wind farm: 29 turbines supply electricity for around 140,000 households
With the Cerignola wind farm, BKW is expanding its wind energy production in Italy. In Apulia, it has built 29 wind turbines with an output of 125 MW, which produce over 310 GWh of electricity annually. This is equivalent to the calculated annual electricity demand of around 140,000 households.

More wind energy for a growing production portfolioBKW has been active in wind energy production in Italy for many years and has an established portfolio, particularly in southern Italy. At the same time, it is pursuing the goal of significantly expanding its own energy production and is investing two billion Swiss francs in wind, solar and hydropower projects in Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe by 2030. Against this backdrop, one of BKW’s largest wind energy projects was developed near the Apulian city of Cerignola. With 125 MW, Cerignola was intended to substantially expand BKW’s wind energy production in Italy and strengthen its existing presence in southern Italy.
A project from a single sourceIn Cerignola, BKW adopted an integrated approach: it became involved in the two Cerignola Nord and Sud projects before the construction phase. This enabled it to structure key contracts for procurement, energy and operational management itself and to steer the project across various phases.

Its responsibility ranges from engineering and procurement through construction and operation to marketing the electricity generated and maintaining the plants. In implementing the project, BKW worked closely with local authorities and partners and focused on local value creation.
From construction to commissioning in twelve monthsConstruction work started near the city of Cerignola at the beginning of 2025. Within just twelve months, BKW, together with its partners, built 29 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 125 MW. Construction and commissioning were completed on schedule and within budget. Commissioning took place in two stages: Cerignola Nord has been producing electricity since November 2025, while Cerignola Sud was connected to the grid in January 2026. Since then, the entire wind farm has been in operation, with expected annual production of over 310 GWh.
125 MW of additional capacity for BKW’s wind energy portfolioWith Cerignola, BKW is expanding its wind energy portfolio in Italy by 125 MW of installed capacity. The project therefore strengthens BKW’s existing wind energy production in southern Italy and expands its own production capacity for the long term. With a 100 per cent stake, BKW will remain responsible for operation, maintenance and electricity marketing even after completion. Cerignola thus demonstrates how BKW integrates a major wind energy project into its own production portfolio from completion through to long-term operation.
